Marker at 8,314 ft Monitor Pass

While most of Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway is along California State Route 4, a part of State Route 89 from Grover Hot Spring to Monitor Pass is incorporated into this Scenic Byway, making Monitor Pass the easternmost part of the route.

Monitor Pass is at 8,314 feet elevation. It offers stunning views at the Mountains of the Sierra Nevada and at the Carson Sink.

The pass also acts as a meteorological divide between Nevada's desert climate and the moist, snowy conditions of the Sierra's western slopes. It was a stunning experience to drive up through a barren, dry wilderness, roll over the pass and all of the sudden be in the middle of a forest.

Caution: This pass is subject to seasonal closures.
It is also very narrow and windy and not suited for RVs or other big vehicles.
