Long Description:St Paul's Chapel of the Trinity Parish is the oldest church in
Manhattan. The cornerstone was laid in 1764, George Washington
worshiped there and after his inauguration, both houses of Congress
joined him for a service at St Paul's.
The modern history is grimmer as St Paul's cemetery is on Church
Street directly across from where the twin towers fell covering St
Paul's with debris. The church took on an eight month task of
caring for the workers. Feeding them, counseling them, setting up
cots in the sanctuary for them to sleep on and just taking care of
them.
Now there is a very touching memorial in the sanctuary keeping
the remembrance of those dark days alive. Some things were left by
the workers and some were memorials put on the fence around the
cemetery.
