Standing in the back of Grimmons Park in the Ten Hills region of Somerville is an odd sight - what appears to be the entrance to a building, but without the building. And that's exactly what it is!
The playground is located in the northeastern corner of the city of Somerville in the Ten Hills area. The land was owned by John Winthrop in 1630, and was sold to Robert Temple in 1731 and later Samuel Jaques in 1832. The City of Somerville bought the area in 1928 for an elementary school. Construction was finished in 1930 and the school was named for Charles A. Grimmons, a former mayor of Somerville.
In 1980, dwindling enrollment forced the school to close. By 1984, the school had been raised and most of the land sold for development, but a small portion was developed into the park and basketball court there today. The name of the school was transferred to the park. One portion of the school structure was saved - the entrance arch, which stands over the park to this day.
