Although the hot spring and thermal bath is the main reason for people to visit this park, there is a lot more to do here. Just check out the countryside; this is a good place to go hiking!

Background: Once a summer meeting place for the Washoe people, this large meadow became a cattle ranch in 1854. John Hawkins, first white settler in the area, built the first ranch house almost at the same location as today's swimming pool. It burned down in 1900. Hawkins also dug a 12-feet diameter hole to collect water from the hot spring.
In 1873, Alvin M. Grover, hotel owner from Markleeville, partnered with Hawkins, enlarged the pool and built a bath house.
In 1959, the entire property was turned over to the state of California and became a State Park.
