The building that currently houses Somerville City Hall once held the area high school. When it was built in 1852, the structure was Greek Revival-style, was shorter (2½ stories), and lacked wings. Subsequent additions would enlarge the building: 1896 saw the construction of a southern wing, while 1923-4 brought the addition of a northern wing, the completion of a third story, addition of a clock tower, spire, and weathervane, and general restyling of the building to its current design, closer to Georgian Revivalist architecture. The City Hall moved to the building in 1871.
