Santa Croce is the main Franciscan church of Florence and was, according to legend, originally founded by St. Francis himself. The building was consecrated in 1442, although many portions of it have been renovated. The marble facade by Nicolò Matas dates from 1857-1863. Since the Renaissance, numerous famous Florentine figures have been buried or commemorated here including Michaelangelo, Leon Battista Alberti, Galileo, and Enrico Fermi.
