Although Big Stone County was established in 1862 the population was very small and it was not until 1881 that the county was officially organized to conduct its own legal affairs. In 1885 fire destroyed the building used as a courthouse. A three story frame building was constructed the next year and used until the present brick and stone courthouse was built in 1902, at a cost of $29,999.
The light tan brick is ornamented with local granite. The architectural style has been described as Gothic and also as between Romanesque and Classical. The courthouse square is located on a hilltop and the west facing building can be seen from some distance on the far side of the Minnesota River.
