Grant County was organized in 1873. Its first wooden courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1881. The present courthouse, built in 1915, is a domed Classical Revival structure designed by the architect who did the South Dakota State Capital building.
A small golden glass dome tops an interior rotunda which is decorated with large murals. The interior of the building, including the rotunda and the courtroom, has been restored as closely as possible to the original colors and decorations.
The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
