In the 1890s Andrew Stavig and his younger brothers, Hans and Magnus, sons of a Norwegian immigrant, opened Stavig's department store in the fast growing town of Sisseton, SD.
Andrew built this beautiful three story home for his family in 1916. The ten bedroom, three story house has a wrap around porch and a corner tower. At times the family shared the house with newly arrived immigrants and store clerks. Andrew's daughter Mathilda lived in the house her entire life. When she died at age 90 in 1994 the house was willed to the Heritage Museum of Roberts County.
The exterior and interior of the house have had no major alterations.
It is open for tours, Thursday through Monday, from Memorial day to Labor Day.
