In 1849, during the California Gold Rush, an old Indian trading trail became the major migration route into California. With the advent of the automobile in 1911, the old wagon road was replaced by the Alpine State Highway. The narrow, windy road accommodated animals, wagons, and the first slow moving cars. This picture shows one of these first automobiles at Peddler Hill. We are not sure when this picture was taken, but it must have been before the road was widened in the mid 1930s. Based on the road and the car, we opted for 1930.
1930 2008

Notice that there is no lake in the 1930 picture. This lake, the Lower Bear River Reservoir was completed in 1951.

When the road was widened in the 1930s, it was also moved a little bit further away from the slope. The picture above shows the course of the road as it has been since the mid 1930s, when this overlook was built. The original road, as shown in the historic picture was at the left side of today's wall, pretty much where the picnic area is now.

The historic picture was taken from an orientation table at the top of the hill. (location of
the picture marked by arrow). Eldorado National Forest has provided a detailed pdf version of this table, including the picture. Click here to see it.

Year photo was taken: 1930
