The Gopher Tortoise is the "Landlord of the Longleaf Pine/Sandhill Community" here in the sanctuary. We weren't lucky enough to have seen one of the tortoises while in the gardens, but I have to admit I wasn't really looking for them. With the beauty of the gardens and tower, they were probably right under my feet...
