The Peace Bridge is one of four vehicular bridges in the Buffalo/Niagara region that crosses the Niagara River to/from the United States and Canada. This is the largest of the four, with the arched portion of the bridge crossing the river. The part spanning the Blackrock Canal is built with a truss and is much higher than the arches to allow taller ships to pass through.

When the bridge was opened in 1927, it was originally intended to support two lanes of 20-ton trucks and two tracks for 40-ton trolleys. Although the supporting structural steel is in place to support the trolley tracks, the tracks were never installed. Today, the Peace Bridge has been modified to a three-lane bridge with twelve-foot wide lanes. The center lane is reversible depending on traffic situations.

There has been talks, designs, and redesigns for over 10 years to try and come up with a plan for either a completely new bridge or a twin for this bridge to alleviate traffic. Continual delays and protests from residents, government and other agencies have stalled any new construction, and it may be several more years before an agreement is reached.
