This is an old tobacco packhouse barn that the best I can verify is at least 50 years old, probably closer to 100 years. These barns were used to store tobacco after it had been cured, and was waiting to go to market.

This paticular barn is made from oak and is still rock steady after all of these years. Inside there is a loft, but some of the loft was vandalized for it's planks. To the left side of the barn there used to be a basement for extra storage. I've since filled in the basement with dirt. As was typical of the times, the barns foundation rest on field stones.

When the farm land was sold to a subdivider and lots created for private homes they somehow miscalculated and left the barn straddling 2 seperate property lines. Rather than have it torn down, my neighbor and I decided to co-own it.

My neighbors who are in their late 40's actually remember working the tobacco field as kids and storing the tobacco in this barn. The old farm house that was close by burned to the ground 30 years ago, and now the barn is the only thing left of the original farm.

As stated earlier the barn sits on my property. Feel free to pull into the driveway and take pictures. My drive is the one with the tractor tire around the base of the mailbox.
