Summarizing from the Olivet Nazarene University's website, there are several key dates in the history of Olivet.
A group of families began teaching classes in 1907 in Georgetown, Illinois, which is a few miles south of Danville, IL. By 1909, they purchased some land for a permentant location in nearby Olivet, Illinois. However, in 1912, they turned over operations to a relatively new denomination called the Church of the Nazarene.
A devistating fire in 1939, forced the college's leadership to decide whether or not to stay in its southern Illinois location. About a year earlier, St. Viator’s College in Bourbonnais, Illinois went defunct and its campus was for sale.
Without having to rebuild, the, then, Olivet Nazarene College could begin teaching again by 1940 in the new location.
The location closer to the more urbanized Chicago proved to be well suited for the college and enrollment and the campus expanded. In 1986, the name of the school was changed to Olivet Nazarene University to reflect its educational expansion, as well.
Today, most people in the general public are more familiar with Olivet Nazarene University not for its education or it history, but for the fact it hosts the pre-season training camp for the Chicago Bears. It is a relationship ONU is willing to bear... (sorry).
