From the sign at the cave:
"Deer Lick Cave is a sandstone rock overhang cave.
Sandstone is permeable rock formed of sand deposited millions of years ago at the edge of an ancient ocean that once covered Ohio.
Salt trapped in the sands became embedded in the stone that eventually formed from the sand sediment.
Today, as water slowly perculates through the rock, it picks up salt that wildlife lick off of the stone's surface."
