Most of southwest Virginia was originally settled by Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. Records indicate that the first Presbyterian church in this immediate area was established around 1782 under the jurisdiction of the Hanover Presbytery. This first church was called Springfield and located on what is now known as the Irb Forest land, approximately one mile north of the present church location.

The names of the first pastors are unknown, but records show that a Rev. Andrew Campbell of Blountville, Tennessee accepted the call as pastor for 1/4 time on December 7, 1821.

The church was moved to its present location in 1825 and was constructed of logs. In 1827 the Abingdon Presbytery met at Springfield church and were petitioned for 1/4 or as much more as may be convenient for the ministerial labors of the Rev. Stephen Bovell.

On October 7, 1831 "the session of Springfield requested that the name of Beaver Creek should be substituted instead of Springfield. Therefore, resolved that their request be granted and that said church should be hereafter know by the name Beaver Creek."

On July 26, 1841 ,Peter Minnick granted a certain tract of land located on Beaver Creek bearing the same description as that of the present location of Maple Grove Presbyterian Church to John Gibson, James S. Davis and Peter Minnick, Trustees, for use and benefit of the Lutheran and the Beaver Creek congregations of the Presbyterian church. If not occupied by either of the above nominations then to be free for use by any Christian Denomination, but for no other purpose. It is never to be used as a grass boundary or a cemetery, and when it is no longer used for a place of worship is to revert to the estate of Peter Minnick or his heirs. This grant was made July 26, 1841 and committed to record in the Clerk's office in Washington County September 27, 1841.
