[FR] Il s'élève à 1 424 mètres. Station de ski et de détente (ferme-auberge à 1 100 m, restaurant à 1 342 m, Hôtel du Club Vosgien à 1351 m). Depuis le sommet, doté d'une table d'orientation circulaire, on aperçoit (voir panoramiques ci-dessous) au premier plan, en plaine, Mulhouse, Bâle, Fribourg-en-Brisgau, Colmar, puis en second plan la Forêt-Noire et les Jura suisse et français, et en arrière plan, par conditions météo favorables, une vaste partie de la chaîne des Alpes, de l'Autriche et du Liechtenstein au mont Blanc.
Le sommet du Grand Ballon est accessible par trois sentiers, environ 15 minutes de marche à partir de la route des Crêtes.
Un monument aux Diables bleus de la Première Guerre mondiale, les valeureux Chasseurs alpins, a été érigé en 1927 et inauguré par Raymond Poincaré. Dépossédé de sa statue de bronze par l'envahisseur en septembre 1940, il retrouva la majesté qu'on lui connaît aujourd'hui en octobre 1960, grâce au sculpteur Bouret.
Le sommet est équipé depuis 1997 d'un radar servant à l'aviation civile, pour la gestion du trafic aérien à l'approche des aéroports internationaux de Mulhouse et Strasbourg.
La vision sur le massif du Mont-Blanc, situé à 229 km, est surtout possible entre octobre et mai et dans les meilleures conditions météo, peu d'humidité.
[EN] The well known Route des Crêtes (French for road of the peaks) circumvents the mountain top around east, crossing a mountain pass at an altitude of 1343 m, between the Markstein winter sports station and Hartmannswillerkopf rocky spur.
The summit is accessible by 3 paths and about 15 minutes walking distance from the Route des Crêtes.
A monument to the Blue Devils from the First World War, the bold Alpine hunters, was erected in 1927 and inaugurated by Raymond Poincaré. The bronze statue was removed by the Germans in 1940 but replaced in 1960 by the sculptor Bouret.
The summit is equiped with a aviation radar installation built in 1997. It manages civil aviation traffice for the international airports of Mulhouse and Strasbourg.
In good weather conditions the alps can be seen from here.
