According to the Swisher website (http://www.swisher.com/main/history.cfm), in 1861, David Swisher, from Newark, Ohio, received a small cigar business as a settlement of debt. Around 1927, the plant in Jacksonville was opened, rolling the cigars by machine and doing so well that the facilities in Ohio were closed making Jacksonville the Swisher headquarters. By 1940, the Jacksonville operation was the largest cigar factory in the world under one roof.
Today the corporate headquarters are located in Darien, CT but Swisher Sweets are still manufactured in Jacksonville, Florida.
