The Meskwaki are of an Algonquin origin from the Eastern Woodland Culture area. Meskwaki and Sauk are two distinct tribal groups. Through history they have associated closely. They fought the French during the Fox Wars (1701-1742). They allied in 1735 to fend off Europeans and other Indian tribes.
After the Black Hawk War of 1832, The U.S. combined them into one group known as the Sac & Fox Confederacy. A series of land cessions resulted in their loss of all lands and they were removed to Kansas in 1845. Some Meskwaki remained hidden in Iowa, and others came back within a few years. Iowa enacted a law allowing them to stay. In 1857 the Meskwaki purchased the first 80 acres in Tama County. Ten years later the U.S. started paying annuities to the Meskwaki, which gave the Meskwaki a formal identity as the Sac and Fox of Iowa. In 1896 the State of Iowa ceded all jurisdiction over the Meskwaki to the Federal Government.
Owing to the noble sacrifices and visions of ancestors, the Meskwaki still remain…and even thrive. Today they number around 1000 members and have a 3200-acre parcel of land.
