This milestone marks the divergence of two paths to Boston town, given the inscriptions on both sides. One side reads:

"BOSTON
8 MILES
1734
A. I."

and the other reads:

"CAMBRIDGE
New Bridge
2 3/4 Miles
1794"

The "A.I." refers to the original surveyor, Abraham Ireland, and "New Bridge" became the West Boston Bridge, which was replaced by the Longfellow Bridge in 1906.
