The WESTERN & SOUTHERN LIFE INSURANCE BUILDING, NE, corner of Fourth St.
and Broadway, is a 4-story structure with eight massive Ionic columns on the
Fourth Street facade and four similar ones on the Broadway side. It was
completed in 1916. The 7-story annex extending toward Fifth Street was
added in 1935. The home office of the company, which was founded in 1888,
has been on this site since 1901.
Predecessor of the building was the historic Dexter home, where Charles
Dickens had been entertained. Decades before, John Cleves Symmes had sold
the site for $4.

The building continues to serve the Western & Southern Financial Group, with
their subsidiary the Columbus Life Insurance occupying the building. The
headquarters for the Western & Southern Financial Group are located within the
same complex of buildings.
