Chequamegon – Nicolet National Forest was started in 1933 to protect the northern forests from logging. The northern forests had been destroyed to provide wood for a rapidly growing America. Farms were started and provided income to immigrants. When the economy went bust in the late 1920s and early 1930s, these farmers could not afford to pay the taxes on the land. The land went back to the Counties. The land was then protected and given the chance to revert back to forest.

Today, the land is still protected and used as a recreational area for visitors. Snowmobiles and skiers use hundreds of miles of trails in the winter. ATVs, bikers, and hikers use the same trails in the summer. Some trailhead parking locations do require permits, usually available on site. Annual permits can be purchased at the Ranger Headquarters and other locations. With a special permit in December, you can come to the forest with your family to find and cut that special Christmas Tree to put in your home.
