These markers stand in the southern corner of Foss Park in northeastern Somerville. The more interesting marker is quite difficult to read, as the multitoned nature of the rock obscures the carved text. However, the rock depicts a boat traveling down the canal, with the following text:
"The Middlesex Canal (1793 & 1803) ran from the Merrimack River in Lowell to the Charles River in Boston, passing through Foss Park just a few feet from this spot."
The other marker is to the west and is shaped somewhat like a tombstone. It simply reads:
"Route of Middlesex Canal
Chartered 1793
Opened 1803"

Visit Instructions:
When logging a Massachusetts Historic Marker, we ask that you not only describe your visit, but to upload a picture from it. The picture does not have to be of the marker - one picture of the marker is enough. But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
