Long Description:This statue was dedicated in 1988 to honor Father Eusebio Francisco
Kino. Padre Kino was born in Segno, Trentino, Italy in 1645. In
1689 he traveled to the Americas as a Jesuit Missionary serving the
Pimería Alta region (modern day Sonora, Mexico and southern
Arizona, USA). Prior to his death, Padre Kino had traveled
extensively throughout the Pimería Alta where he established 17
missions. Likely, the most notable of these in the Tucson area is
Mission San
Xavier del Bac located south of Tucson. Padre Kino died in
Magdalena de Kino, Sonora, Mexico in 1711. He was interred here and
his crypt is a primary attraction in Magdalena.
There are three copies of this statue located around the world. The
Tucson, Arizona, USA statue listed in this waypoint is one. There
is another in Magdalena de Kino, Sonora, Mexico where Kino died.
And finally a third statue is located in Segno, Trentino, Italia
where he was born.
