Before Shenandoah National Park was dedicated in the 1930's, it was home to many mountaineer families.

Today, although Mother Nature is slowly reclaiming and obliterating evidence of their presence, many road traces can still be found throughout the Park along with the occasional abandoned vehicle.

This chassis is located near Skyland Lodge off the Furnace Spring Trail close to the intersection with the Passamaquoddy Trail. Before it was a national park, Skyland Lodge was known as Stony Man Camp owned and operated by George Pollock. Many guests drove up the mountain on the nearby old Skyland Road. Perhaps this vehicle belonged to one of them -- broke down and abandoned long ago.

The GPS coordinates mark the spot on the Furnace Spring Trail where you can view the vehicle about 50' below the trail in the trees. It is much easier to see in winter and early spring. The more adventurous can climb down for further inspection, but caution is always recommended.
