This small building is the only remaining portion of a prison that was originally built by the state of Alabama in the mid 1800s. The first inmate entered the prison in 1842 after being sentenced to 20 years for harboring a runaway slave. The prison originally kept females and males separated and it was separated by race as well. The prison was in use until the 1940s. The property that housed the original 208 cell prison with 25 foot high walls (known as the walls of Alabama) was sold off in 1945. This small parcel is all that is left of the prison today.
