At the entrance to Afton Forest Preserve in DeKalb County, IL, this bell greets the visitors.
The plaque at the base reads:
In Memory Of All Homesteaders and Early Settlers in DeKalb County, IL. 1995
The bell is currently not functioning since the clapper has been removed and it does not easily swing on its axle.
The original location of the bell is not listed, but since a pulley is required, it would have been in a tower of some sort. A church or even possibly a school are my likely guesses.
