In response to the destruction of artist John Briggs' celebrated "Reflection of a Town" (waymark WM1V1N, Whistle Stop Mural), two brothers, James and Blake Emory, have set about painting a new tribute to the people of Plant City on a wall very near the location of the old mural. It's on the back wall of Espress Yourself Coffee 101 and Focus Magazine, about 100' from where the Briggs mural once stood at Collins Street and Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Boulevard. The Emory brothers are part of an artists' colony based in Ybor City. They've created wall art throughout the county, from Estella's restaurant on Davis Islands to the Jamaican Jerk Hut on Fletcher Avenue. Their first art job, almost ten years ago, was to paint an Aztec calendar on the ceiling of La Esperanza Mexican Restaurant on Prosser Street in Plant City. Their work can also be found in the children's wing of Plant City's First Baptist Church and at the Plant City Athletic Club on Evers Street.
For this new mural, Sherwin-Williams donated paint and Sunbelt Rentals contributed a hydraulic lift. It's hoped that enough money can be raised to expand the mural across the back of the Whistle Stop Cafe next door.
As this mural develops, we will update the page with new photos.
