This memorial is located on the highest point in Mt. View Cemetery on the edge of the Niagara Escarpment. It is a marble and limestone obelisk some 17 ft. high originally topped with a 9 inch cannonball. Inscribed on its' sides are the names and deeds of 24 soldiers killed during the war arranged by rank. The base of the obelisk is inscribed with " Fallen-Heroes-Soldiers-Memorial. The marble sub-base is inscribed with four epitaphs which read as follows;
Front,
Erected to the memory of those citizens of Pekin and vicinity who enlisted as soldiers and fell in the service of their country in the war of 1861-65.
Side,
Who by noble sacrificing their lives in vindicating the cause of Universal Freedom, have bequeathed to those who shall live after them an example of Patriotism and true Heroism.
Back,
Imspiring their countrymen in the exercise of those of those Virtues in Peace and that Valor in War which is the support and protection of Righteous Civil Government by a free People.

The Courage and Devotion shown by the Soldiers during the War for the maintenance of the American Union have made their names the glory and pride of the Nation.
