Built between 1190 and 1220 The Priory was founded for the regular cannons of Augustine,this church has been a focus for Christian worship for more than 800 years,it continues to serve the local community and for the 60,000 pilgrims and visitors who visit here yearly.
A great part of the Priory was destroyed at the Dissolution of the monasteries,but the church remains because it is a parish church.
In 1536-37,Cartmel Priory was surrendered and the cannons dispersed,the priory church was saved through the efforts of the parishioners.
