The Village of Wilmette has had a library since 1880, when it was founded by a society of readers in the small town at the time. In 1901 the free public library of Wilmette was founded in rented space. In 1905 the library got its own space, which it outgrew in 1935, when branches were opened in area schools. The village voted to fund a new building, which was dedicated in 1951.
Expansion occurred over time: in 1965, a children's wing was opened. Another expansion was completed in 1967, and yet another in 1979. These expansions were smaller, but a multi-million dollar expansion project nearly doubled the size of the building was opened in 1986. A vestibule was added in 1994.
