Long Description:
This gauge station is located along Mother Brook and reports flow and depth information to the USGS network.

Mother Brook is an unusual waterway. In 1639, a canal about .25 miles long was dug between the brook's original head to the Charles River. This was done to divert some water from the Charles to power a grist mill located downstream. The water continued to the confluence with the Neponset River about 3 miles away. Since most of the flow at this point is from the Charles River, the water flow and depth is mostly influenced from how much water is diverted from the Charles River.

The gauge can be easily seen from the Washington Street Bridge that crosses Mother Brook, though you may have to get out of the car and look - brush and trees can block the view from the bridge.

RIVER GAUGE INFORMATION:
The gauge measures the depth and flow of Mother Brook.

The discharge record begins in 1931 and appears continuous.

Mass. Conservation and Recreation oversees the gauge, locally.
