Yard Birds was a home improvement store that opened in 1947. All of their store locations featured large "yardbirds" out front. This "superstore", located along Old Highway 99, had two birds.
This store opened in 1971 with a 60 foot tall yard bird out front. Sadly, that one burnt to the ground in 1976. The new bird that was built is in the "decoy" style and is 30 feet high and 60 feet long. On its left side a strange small bird seems to be emerging from the giant bird like something out of "The Fly."
On the other side of the store (there are entrances on both sides) is a small eight foot tall version of the original yardbird. This is the style that was found at the smaller Yard Bird locations. You can see another bird of this style in an art yard in Centralia, Washington.
To learn more about these birds read this article at roadsideamerica.com.
Be sure to check out the photo of the inside of the giant bird. I braved spiders aplenty for that shot. ;) You will also find photos of the smaller bird in the gallery.
