The Marion Star was originally started on Oct 8, 1877 and was known as the Daily Pebble

In the 1884 Warren G. Harding, who was 19 at the time, purchased the paper for $300, and began calling it the "Marion Daily Star". At that time the newspaper was one of 3 local daily papers, and was a struggling business. After Harding acquired it, he updated parts of the paper, and pushed to have it as the official daily paper. Many residents objected, but he eventually won. The paper's success forced Harding to leave the paper due to exhaustion, but he eventually came back to help in its operation.

In late 1923, President Harding sold the paper to focus on his Presidential career. By that time it had become, and still is, one of Ohio's most successful small-town newspapers. It has been owned by several entities over the years. It is currently owned by the Gannett Newspaper organization. They kept the offices in Marion, but moved most printing services to nearby Mansfield, Ohio. It is also a part of the Newspaper Network of Central Ohio.
