Carlos Gomes was one of the most distinguished nineteenth century classical composers, being the first New World composer whose work was accepted by Europe. His first opera was Noite do Castelo. The first to premier in Milan was Il Guarany and one of his last was Lo Schiavo (about the end of slavery is Brazil). Gomes also wrote a piece for America’s independence in Philadelphia. It was called Il saluto del Brasile. Gomes turned down the opportunity to compose the Brazilian national anthem due to his loyalty to the monarch.
