Cass county was established, with Plattsmouth as county seat, in 1854 while Nebraska was still a territory. By the late 1880s there was talk of moving the county seat to a more central location but The construction of this large and expensive courthouse kept the county seat here in Plattsmouth.

The red brick courthuse has a tall functioning clock tower. It occupies a courthouse square at the east end of the historic downtown area of Plattsmouth.
