This house was occupied in 1885 by Judge and Mrs. Thomas A. Sherwood. Sherwood was born in Georgia, and his families could be traced to colonial days. He received his law degree at the Cincinnati, Ohio, Law School in 1857. Eventually, he settled in Springfield, and in 1872 he was nominated by the Democratic Party for Judge of the Supreme Court of the State of Missouri, and he was elected for three consecutive ten-year terms. The Sherwoods lived here until 1904. Purchasing the Sherwood House in 1904 were.John and Agnes Landers, who with their son, Douglas, came here from Wisconsin. Douglas lived there until.his marriage to Marie Heffernan in 1906. At that time, the young couple moved next door, to 649 South. The Sherwood-Landers House is a fine example of the picturesque Gothic cottage. Its array of gables and pediments are exuberant. Fish-scale shingles, ornate brackets, a pedimented portico adorned with garlands, bay windows, porches, columns, balustrades--this house has it all. It is now owned by the Burrell Clinic.
