NGS lists the Poteau Triangulation Station as "Surface Mark Destroyed" and places the Station on the Bates Topographic Map. The actual Station is shown on the Cauthron 1958 Topographic Map.

The Azimuth Mark is in good shape and lies East of the old station surface mark and N-NE of the bases of the old Poteau Mountain Lookout Tower. This area is currently occupied by communication towers.

RM 3 1935 1959 was also found a short distance North of the old Station. The stem of a disk in a boulder was also located a short distance to the NE of the old Station and is likely the remains of RM 1 1935. The description for the Poteau Mountain Lookout Tower mentions that Poteau 1935 RM 2 was located directly under the Tower and that the tower was 239.24 feet away from Poteau Station. A search with a metal detector under the old tower could not find RM 2 and it is presumed to have been bulldozed away.

I cannot find any "Documented History" of the Poteau Azimuth 1935 Mark because the Surface Poteau Triangulation Mark has been reported as "Destroyed."
Azimuth Condition: Good

Your Directions:
The mark had previously been found and a picture posted with the Poteau Mountain Lookout Tower page at Geocaching.com. I found it by pure luck. It projects about six inches above the ground and I was able to spot it from about fifty feet away.I marked it's Waypoint with a handheld Garmin Vista GPSr. It is about 80 feet NE of the old Poteau Mountain Lookout Tower and about 300 feet East of the destroyed Poteau Triangulation Station.
