He was born in 1839 in England. He earned the Medal of Honor during the Civil War for heroism in April 1862 for service with Andrew's Raiders in Georgia. He was one of 19 men, who, by direction of Gen. Mitchell (or Buell), penetrated nearly 200 miles south into enemy territory and captured a railroad train at Big Shanty, Ga., and attempted to destroy the bridges and track between Chattanooga and Atlanta. He died July 11, 1866 at the age of 27.

There is also a website devoted entirely to the story of Andrews's Raiders. Logically it is at www.andrewsraid.com
