Jacob Russell was born in Winsor, Connecticut. He served in the Revolutionary War before settling in Warrensville Township, Ohio. The section of Warrensville Township became Shaker Heights, Ohio.

His grave sits on the site of the 475 acres of land he purchased following the war. His remains rest alone in a small fenced-in area alongside the road. A marker celebrating his service in the Revolutionary War has been mounted on a large stone in front of the grave. There is street parking within 250 feet of the grave.

As an interesting note of history, Jacob Russell's son Ralph became a Shaker convert and allowed the religion to establish a Shaker colony on the family farm. That colony led to the naming of this Cleveland suburb.
