The congregation of the St. Paul A.M.E. Church was founded in 1880 when Columbia's blacks who had belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church, North decided to form their own church. The current church building was dedicated April 17, 1892; the building had cost $10,000. St. Paul A.M.E. played an influential role in Columbia's black community serving both as the religious center for the community and social center of the community. The church continues to serve its active congregation.
The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
