From their website: The community was still quite small when the Library was established in April 1961. The Library opened to the public in 1965 with few books and no paid staff at the remodeled Butler School - Village Hall. The Library became a department of the Village of Oak Brook in 1970. In 1971 the Library Commission was formed and the first Village Librarian was hired. The Library joined the DuPage Library System consortium in 1973 to offer residents the benefits of reciprocal services and collections, though the library catalog was not automated until 1992. In 1996 a referendum to build a new library was passed but it was not until March 9th 2002 that the new Library was opened. The new Library building of 24,000 square feet was designed by Carow-Architects-Plus of Chicago, a distinguished architectural firm specializing in public buildings.
