The enormous Hermitage museum in central St. Petersburg has many aspects. Its collections are huge with an estimate of approximately three million items on display. It is especially strong in Italian Renaissance, Dutch, and French Impressionist paintings but there are also extensive collections of Greek and Roman antiquities and exhibits of Siberian and Central Asian art. The items have been obtained from many sources with much of the art coming from the private collections of the Russian royalty and nobility.
The buildings of the Hermitage are an attraction themselves. Five form a complex fronting on the Neva river and bordering the Palace Square. The most impressive building is the magnificent 1057 room Winter Palace which was begun in 1754 during the reign of the Empress Elizabeth but not completed until after her death. Catherine the Great, between 1764 and 1787, added a wing, the Small Hermitage, which she used as a personal retreat from the court and the Large Hermitage which was used to house her growing art collection. In 1783-87 the Hermitage Theater was added, linked the other buildings by a gallery. The final section added was the New Hermitage, constructed 1839-51, adjoining the Large Hermitage wing. In the late 1990s the curved Neoclassical Staff building on the opposite side of the Palace Square became part of the State Hermitage Museum.
General tours of the Hermitage start with the magnificent public rooms of the Winter Palace and proceed, usually in chronological order, through the rooms containing the major paintings. This is a mere introduction to what can be seen here. The official site of the Hermitage Link has extensive information about the museum, its history and its collections.
