The H.J.HEINZ COMPANY PLANT, entrance at 1062 Progress St., is the main plant of the world-famous '57 Varieties' and covers 17 city blocks. Henry J. Heinz (1844-1919) at the age of eight sold vegetables from the family garden. In 1869 he started bottling horse radish in the basement of his Sharpsburg house, now standing in a court surrounded by 27 massive plant buildings. From the firms experimental Service Building, decorated with beautiful murals, contains dining, social, and recreation rooms for employees. The SARAH HEINZ HOUSE, a community center, houses clubrooms, library, and athletic facilities for the plant workers.
