Due to an absence of coastal lights along this stretch of Lake Ontario, construction of this lighthouse was approved by Congress in 1891, and the structure completed in 1896. It is distinctive in that it had its tower shortened by two thirds shortly after its deactivation in 1954 as a result of a long history of leaks first noted in 1902. A product of the Victorian style of construction, it was modeled after the Cleveland lighthouse and was equipped with Fresnel Lens of 180 degree and then 270 degree traverse. The lighthouse and grounds have been privately owned since 1957 and are currently up for sale.
