John Colter, one of the Corps of Discovery expedition members grew up here in Maysville, then known as Limestone. This was an important river town on the Ohio at the time. Nearby buffalo river crossing and road was the reason the town is here.

At the town then called Old Limestone, future privates John Colter and George Shannon may have joined Lewis on a test basis. Colter would become the most famous enlisted man in the party, as a mountain man who was the first white to see the geysers and mudpots of future Yellowstone National Park--too bad people thought he was just "yarning" them with his descriptions. Shannon, the youngest soldier, was just 18 that beginning year of the trip; he might have joined Lewis as early as during the Pittsburgh stay.
