Lake Eola Park was established in 1888. Lake Eola is actually a sinkhole lake like many of the lakes in central Florida. The actual sinkhole is located north of its signature fountain and goes to a depth of approximately 80 ft. The total acreage of the park is approximately 43 acres, of which 23 acres is water.
At various times the park has contained a zoo, a horse track, tennis courts, and a pier with a dance area and music broadcast by a local radio station. The first band shell in the park was built in 1910 and since then three others have been built in the same location.
The first Lake Eola fountain was installed in 1912 by Mayor Sperry at a cost of $10,000. A second fountain was installed for approximately $350,000 in 1957. Originally called the Centennial Fountain, it received its current name in 1965 in honor of a local banker who championed its installation.
Don't be surprised if the fountain isn't working - it seems to get struck by lightning on a regular basis.
