Originally 60 acres, the site was mostly farm fields along the edge of Lake Springfield. Under the guidance of Jens Jensen, trees were planted and meandering trails were layed out. They were designed to be a landscape Abraham Lincoln would have been familiar with and, in turn, to provide a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln.
Copies of the original site plans can be seen in the National Register application as an Adobe Acrobat Reader
.PDF file.
Today, the trees are mature and the garden is now over 100 acres, which includes a restored prairie the west.
The Memorial Garden are open daily from sunrise to sunset. The Nature Center hours are Tuesday - Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m; Sunday 1 to 4 p.m.; and closed Monday.
