"The City Hall is as old as the City. It was here from the start in 1839." said Mayor Herbert Arihood.
The City Hall has undergone three restorations, the latest was under Mayor Susan Smith's direction in 1997.
The Police Department is located in the old section of the City Hall, where the Fire Department was originally located.
The City of Rensselaer was originally named Newton and was renamed to Rensselaer after James Van Rensselaer came to the town as a merchant from Utica, New York, in the Panic of 1837. He assumed the responsibilities of the three square-mile area from pioneer Joseph D. Yeoman and began building the city's strong structure.
