The Minneapolis Sculpture Gardens occupies the site of the old Armory Gardens, which had been under the management of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board since 1913. In 1988 the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board collaborated to turn what was a playing field into the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. In 1992 it was expanded from 7.5 to 11 acres, making it the largest urban sculpture garden in the country at the time. There are more than 40 works on permanent view, and additional temporary installations keep the Garden experience continually fresh.

By far the most famous piece in the garden is Claes Oldenburg's "Spoonbridge and Cherry" sculpture, and over the years the the 5,800 pound spoon and 1,200 pound cherry have become one of the iconic symbols of Minneapolis itself.
